Roaming with your Airtel Uganda line while travelling abroad will ensure you are always reachable even if you are thousands of miles away from home. Our objective at Airtel Uganda is to make roaming with your line a pleasurable experience and as such provide you with information on key roaming areas to enhance and smoothen your experience.

International Roaming FAQs

Question: How does roaming work?

Two mobile phone network operators in different countries enter into a contract called a roaming agreement. This makes them 'roaming partners' so, for example, Airtel Uganda customers can make and receive calls, send and receive SMS, browse the internet, send and receive emails or any other service when applicable, in the Kenya using Airtel Kenya. Airtel Kenya customers can do the same in Uganda.

Question: Where can I use Airtel Uganda's roaming services?

Airtel Uganda has several roaming agreements with different mobile operators in many countries covering East Africa, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Europe and America. Visit our roaming page to view our list of updated roaming partners.

Question: What services will be available while I am roaming?

The following services will be available:

  • Make and receive calls
  • Send and receive SMS
  • Send and receive E-mails
  • Browse the internet
  • Load Credit for visited operator for Prepaid Customers
  • Data Bundles for Prepaid Customers
  • Airtel inflight roaming services

This service allows you to use your number to make calls when travelling outside Uganda thereby enabling you the ease of reaching your family and business colleagues back home as well as make calls to anywhere in the world.

Roaming service is activated on request for voice or data or both services through a written request to your key managing partner.

Question: How do i make calls when abroad?

If you are roaming in the USA and would like to call someone in Uganda, you need to dial as follows: +256 xxxxxxx = (country code) + (xxxx number you wish to call).

Please add '+' before the country code while dialing any number.

Question: How do i make calls to a number in the same country while roaming?

If you are roaming in France and want to call someone in the France (Paris) on their telephone number; you need to dial as follows: +33 xxxxxxx = (France country code) + (number you wish to call).

Question: Do I Receive calls when you're abroad?

The same as when you're in the Uganda except you're charged when you receive calls depending on the country you're roaming in.

Question: How do I access the roaming services?

Postpaid Customers: Roaming services are activated on request for postpaid customers. A service activation request is sent to the Key Account manager who gets the service activated. Service can be activate for voice or voice and data together.

Before travelling please make sure you pay any outstanding bills before leaving the country. This will ensure that your phone service is not interrupted while you are travelling.

Question. How do l call a local phone number in the country where I am roaming?

To dial a number in the country where you are roaming, enter the country code and the area code followed by the number you wish to call e.g. if you are in Kenya and need to call a Kenyan line, dial the number in the following format: +254 733 000000.

You can save time by saving your local contacts in the international format e.g. +256 752 123456.

Question: How do l call Uganda when I am roaming?

If you are calling back home, dial the international access code and the correct country code along with the phone number, omitting the leading zero e.g. +256 703 555 555.

Question: How do I call an Airtel Uganda mobile number that is also roaming abroad?

If you are roaming in the UK and you need to call a friend that is also roaming with an Airtel Uganda number in the UK, dial +256 followed by the rest of the number without the first zero. For Example: to call the mobile number 0703 558900 you should enter +256 703 558900.

Question: How do I send text to other networks when I am roaming?

To send text to other networks when you are roaming, you need to enter the number replacing the first zero with the international dialing code for that country. To send text to a number in Germany, enter +49 723 673 4567 then press Send.

Question: How do I manually change networks when I am abroad?

A. Go to your phone's Settings menu, and change the Network Selection mode. Please note that the process of manually selecting a network varies between phones and devices.

Prepaid roaming is a service that lets you use your prepaid line to make calls when travelling outside Uganda. You can easily reach your family and business colleagues back home as well as make calls to anywhere in the world. Simply load airtime to have access your prepaid roaming service.

Question: How can I top up my airtime while abroad?

You can recharge using Airtel Uganda's available top up options- loading enough airtime before you leave the country or Using recharge vouchers for the visited network. (Option available on Airtel One Network).

Question: How do I access the roaming services?

Prepaid Customers: Roaming services for prepaid customers are activated on default, all the customer is required to do is load credit and ascertain there is a roaming partner in country they intend to travel to. Please refer to list for prepaid roaming partners for further information.

Question: How do i make calls when abroad?

If you are roaming in the USA and would like to call someone in Uganda, you need to dial as follows: +256 xxxxxxx = (country code) + (xxxx number you wish to call).

Data Roaming

This Service enables users to surf the internet, download emails and music, refresh social media feeds, and upload pictures to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook while abroad. To check service availability please see list of roaming partners with whom Airtel Uganda has established GPRS agreements.

Data Roaming FAQs

Question: Can I use my number when I am roaming overseas?

Yes, as long as Airtel Uganda has GPRS agreement in the country you are visiting. Data service is activated on request for Postpaid Customers, while it’s a default service for prepaid customers. Please visit Airtel Data Roaming page for more information.

Question: How much does it cost to browse the Internet and send/receive email from my Smart devices while overseas?

When you use your smart devices as a modem to browse the Internet, you are charged data roaming in increments of ten kilobytes for all of the data you download.

If you are a postpaid customer, all charges will be reflected in your monthly bill. Please visit our updated tariff since charges vary from country to country.

Question: When might I not realize I’m using data roaming?

Many apps, especially those for news and social media, download the latest data in the background, even if they are not in active use. Instant messaging apps like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger also use data.it therefore important that you turn off automatic updates on your phone in while roaming to avoid high charges.

Question. How do I control data cost when I am roaming with my Phone?

Turn off your automatic app updates by restricting your updates to WIFI only

Restrict your data usage to areas where you can access WIFI to allow you to still perform all the functions you use data for at home.

You can purchase data bundles for prepaid customers to use in the Airtel One Network.

Question: How do I switch off data when I am roaming with my Phone?

If you do not want to send/receive mail or browse the Internet on your phone when roaming, simply do the following:

  • From your Menu select Settings
  • Go to Wireless and Networks
  • Select Mobile Networks
  • Go to Data Roaming and select OFF
  • Once you do that, you will make and receive calls or send and receive SMS ONLY
