Dar es Salaam,  Thursday 16th June 2015. Airtel Tanzania, in partnership with Facebook, has launched Free Facebook for Airtel customers in a new campaign called “Bila salio wala MB” a swahili word meaning Facebook without balance . The aim of this initiative is to connect everyone in Tanzania to the Internet and, through this, unlock new opportunities that might not have been possible.

As part of “Bila salio wala MB” campaign, Tanzanians with an Airtel SIM card and an Internet-capable phone will be able to enjoy Free Basics, Facebook and Messenger. Within Facebook, customers will be able chat, post, comment, share, upload photos, view photos and more.

Speaking during the launch of the service, Airtel Tanzania’s Chief Commercial Officer, Arindam Chakrabarty said, “The Internet is a key driver of both social and economic development of any country. Our objective is to connect as many individuals to the Internet and introduce them to the opportunities. We are confident that offering Free Basics with FREE Facebook is a step towards this.”

Free Basics is a set of local Swahili and international websites in Tanzania providing health, education, news, and finance-related information to people so that they can make informed choices and decisions to improve their lives. Free Facebook is the most popular social media platform in the world, allowing customers to engage and share moments with their friends and family. Having our customers access these sites at no cost will open up more opportunities for millions of people, allow them to stay connected, and grow their potential from the wealth of information available on the Internet.

Sharing the details, Airtel Head of Internet Gaurav Dhingra explained “The mechanics are simple. No matter wherever in Tanzania you are, as long as you have a registered Airtel line in your Internet-capable phone, you can login to your Facebook account without airtime or data bundle. Non-Facebook users can also request the Facebook shortcut link to create their account by dialing *148*88#,” added Dhingra.
