airtel appoints Alain Roger Pierre Coefe as Board Chairman for its Burkina Faso operations

Nairobi, July 25th, 2013 – Bharti airtel (“airtel”), a leading telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, today announced the appointment of Mr. Alain Roger Pierre Coefe as Board Chairman for airtel’s operations in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Alain Roger Pierre Coefe, whose experience in the telecommunications sector spans over 17 years, graduated in Economics from Paris X Nanterre (France). Dr. Coefe entered the Burkina Faso Government in 1984 and held several ministerial positions (Trade, Transports & Communication, Planning & Development).

After his tenure in the Government, Dr. Coefe held several senior positions at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Gabon, Congo and Guinea. As a World Bank consultant, he played a pivotal role in defining the national ICT development strategy in Burkina Faso.

As private entrepreneur, Dr. Coefe is the President of the Professional Association of Information Technologies and Communication and also member of various professional associations (Enterprise House, Consular Chamber, France-Burkina Businessmen’ Club).

Speaking on the appointment, Tiemoko Coulibaly, airtel’s CEO for the Francophone region in Africa, said: “airtel Burkina launched its 3G platform in May. Dr. Coefe’s mandate is to guide the local management team as it expands its operations, ushering a new 3G era whilst ensuring a smooth transition following the launch of the platform.”

With presence across 17 African countries, airtel is the largest telecom service provider across the Continent in terms of geographical reach and had over 63.7 million customers at the end of quarter ended March 31, 2013. Globally, airtel is ranked as the 4th largest mobile services provider in terms of customer base.
