malawi – salima primary school for the blind

Situated about 100 kilometers from the capital city of Lilongwe, Salima School for the Blind is located in Daniel Village in Traditional Authority Maganga of  Salima district in Central Malawi.

The school has an enrolment of 2,063 pupils some of which are visually impaired.  The school structure has four dilapidated school blocks which house eight classrooms.  Due to insufficient classrooms, five of the classes at the school learn under a tree.  The classrooms have limited facilities with some having teacher‘s desks and desks for a few pupils.  There are no exercise books.  Five of the school’s 28 teachers are housed at the school.

Immediate needs for the school include double seater desks, exercise books, Braille paper, pencils and pens, school uniforms, sun burn lotion for Albino pupils, school bags, rebuilding of two school blocks,  construction of two  additional school blocks and an administration block, eight toilets, a water pump  for the community, 20 teacher’s houses, and monthly food supplies for visually impaired boarders.
