airtel Money Launch in Malawi

 

On February 29, 2012, airtel Malawi made history when it launched the country's first mobile commerce solution; Airtel Money. Launched under the theme of Evolution, Airtel Money, which is also known as Khusa M'manja, will enable all Airtel Customer, whether banked or unbanked to access various financial services including topping up airtime, paying for bills and sending and receiving money anywhere in Malawi.

The launch event, which was held at the Great Sapitwa Hall at Cross Roads Hotel in Lilongwe was graced by notable high profile individuals including the Guest of Honour, Minister of Finance, Hon. Ken Lipenga, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Patricia Kaliati, Minister of Industry and Trade, Hon. John Bande and Deputy Minister of Agriculture Kingsley Namakwa and the Secretary for Treasury Mr. Joseph Mwanamveka

Speaking at the launch, Airtel Money Country Manager Andrew Santhe, informed the gathering that currently Airtel has a network of over 1,600 agents and plans to increase this number to 5,000 by the end of June.

The following day, a similar presentation was made at the National Assembly where numerous Members Of Parliament registered for the service.

  • airtel Money is a service offering that allows you to load cash into your mobile phone and then use it as a mobile wallet. With airtel Money, one can pay for just about anything
  • airtel Money is available to both prepaid and post-paid customers.

How to Register

  • Visit Chichiri flagship shop, Lilongwe flagship shop and Mzuzu airtel Shop to complete a form and present your original ID that will be photocopied.
  • Then your account will be activated after it has been vetted and approved. You will receive a confirmation SMS of your account status.
  • When you receive airtel Money without registering, your account will be activated on temporary. Temporary status allows limited airtel Money transaction.
  • Once your account has activated on permanent basis you will also receive SMS about this.
  • If your simcard airtel (Zain) Menu hasn’t been updated with the airtel Money menu, advice the airtel Money Staff for an update.
  • After your account has been activated you can be able to “Cash in” airtel Money into your phone i.e. buy virtual money.
  • A customer can also “Cash-out” i.e. changing virtual money to actual cash.

How to transfer money

  • Go to your airtel Money menu
  • Select airtel Money>Money>To phone number
  • Enter mobile number to which money is being transferred
  • Enter amount to be transferred
  • Confirm your request
  • Enter your password
  • You will receive a confirmation message for the transaction

How to pay bills

  • Go to airtel Money menu
  • Select airtel Money>Money>To nickname i.e. BWB, NRWB and ESCOM
  • Enter name of company to which you are paying your bill
  • Enter amount of money to be paid
  • Confirm your request
  • Enter your password
  • Enter your reference number i.e. account number > confirm
  • You will receive a confirmation message for the transaction

How to top up

  • Go to your airtel Money menu
  • Select airtel Money>Money>Top up
  • Enter mobile number you want to top up
  • Enter amount of airtime in kwacha
  • Confirm your request
  • Enter your password(Default password is 1234)
  • You will receive a confirmation message for the transaction

Q: What is airtel Money?

A: airtel Money is a service that allows you to manage your money directly from your mobile phone wherever you are, and at any time you want.

Q: Do I need to have a bank account?

A: airtel Money was designed in a way that everyone, even those without bank accounts, can use it.

Q: Do I need to pay any service charges for having an airtel Money account?

A: No. airtel Money is transaction based service. You are not charged for anything other than the transactions you perform.

Q: Can I top up a prepaid account of any other network in Malawi?

A: Not at the moment. airtel Money top up will only work for airtel numbers

Q: Does airtel Money work across networks?

A: Yes. It works across networks

Q: I do not have an airtel Money menu on my phone. What should I do?

A: There are number of ways to get the airtel Money menu on your phone in case you do not have it already:
– You can call Customer Care and request menu to be send to your phone
– You can perform a SIM swap at airtel Money customer center

Q: Can I use airtel Money if I have no airtime credit?

A: Yes. As long as you conduct airtel Money transactions your account is considered active. You can Top up your account using airtel Money.

Q: Who are the airtel Money agents?

A: airtel Money agents are, generally, airtel airtime dealers who are registered to transact airtel Money services. However, the range and type of Agent is continuously being extended to maximize coverage and convenience (filling stations, supermarkets, post offices and even individuals).

Q: Can I register for airtel Money if I am not an airtel customer?

A: Not at the moment, airtel Money services are only available within airtel network.

Q: What are the charges for airtel money transactions?

A: There are 2 different types of charges that will be applied to your airtel Money transactions. Transaction fees will be automatically deducted from your account .In addition to this airtel has established recommended deposits and withdrawals fees as follows;

Q: What do I do in case of a wrong transfer?

A: The case of wrong transfers should be negligible as you will have a chance to review the transaction details before being sent and cancel it before the command is sent to the system.

Q: I did not get the SMS transaction confirmation?

A: There might be a number of reasons for this:
1. Your SMS Inbox is full. Delete some SMS to make space for new ones.
2. You have diverted messages to screened messages.
3. On some occasions there may be a delay in receiving your confirmation SMS from airtel Money. If you do not receive SMS confirmation within 20 minutes, kindly call airtel Money Customer Care on 121 who will advise on the status of your transaction on the airtel Money system.

Q: What happens if airtel network is down, can I still use airtel Money services?

A: airtel Money system relies on airtel Network for transaction execution. If the service is down, airtel Money will not function.

Q: What if I lose my phone/ SIM card? Will I lose my airtel Money?

A: airtel Money is safe even if you lost your phone. All your transactions are protected by the highest level of security and passwords. You can replace your SIM card in any airtel Customer Care centre. Your airtel Money will be immediately available to you following completion of SIM replacement process. As soon as you find out that your phone is lost or stolen immediate

Q: What if I forget my password?

A: If you forget your password please call 544 to reset your airtel Money password. A Customer Care representative will need to verify your account with information you provided during registration. Make sure the data you are providing matches with your registration form. After successful verification, you will receive SMS with temporary password. For security purposes you will not be able to conduct any further activity unless you change the temporary password.

Q: How many times can I change my password?

A: There is no limit established by the system. You can change as many times as you want.

Q: How do I track the activities on my airtel Money Account?

A: You track all your activities (last 2 transactions, transaction status, previous day, summary of the day and last month summary) directly from your phone using various reports located under the tools section. You can also request the reports to be delivered to your e-mail.

Q: How safe is my Money?

A: Your money is safe since every transaction uses encryption and password that adheres to the highest banking security standards. In addition to this your airtime and money accounts are kept separate.

Q: How does airtel Money work?

A: To put virtual money into your airtel Money account you need to go to an airtel Money agent and buy virtual money. With airtel Money on your account you can send virtual money to other airtel Money accounts, top up your own phone or someone else airtime account, transfer money to and from bank account, pay bills, and pay for some goods and services. To withdraw cash from your airtel Money account you need to go to airtel Money agent and transfer virtual money to the agent who will exchange this for cash.

Q: What is Nick Name and how can I use it?

A: To protect your privacy and security the 7 digits number (nick-name) is automatically created and assigned to your account. It will be communicated to you along with a default password. You can change it any time. Nick names can be utilized in a number of ways: – Privacy protection: send and receive money without disclosing the phone number. – Paying for the goods and services where the nickname is the Merchant name e.g. Chipiku. – Paying bills where the nickname is the utility company name e.g. BWB

Q: Can I send money outside Malawi?

A: No. airtel Money is only available in Malawi.
