airtel donates money to the kabaka foundation

Kampala, Uganda, 24th March 2014 - airtel Uganda launched their new partnership with the Kabaka Foundation at airtel Offices. They donated UGX shs 100,000,000 to the Kabaka run, which is devoted to fundraising towards the Fistula problem in Uganda. Together with the Kabaka Foundation they hope to help and change the lives of Fistula victims in Uganda.

Fistula is an affliction that affects women during protracted labor in child birth and mostly targets underage mothers. For a long time, this affliction has been regarded as a taboo by communities, who have resorted to alienating the victims. Between 50,000-100,000 women get the fistula problem annually in the sun-Saharan Africa and Asia and there are more than two million women already living with fistula. In Uganda, only 42% of births are professionally handled meaning that new mothers have a high probability of getting the affliction. The areas most affected by the disease in Uganda are Masaka, Igandan, Soroti and Kagando. This plight is one that airtel has decided to tackle to build a better and healthier Uganda, with the help of Buganda Kingdom.

Speaking at the occasion, airtel Money director Mr. Nuhu Kanyike said “It is part of our social responsibility to contribute to the well-being of the society in which we live. Today, we are responding to a call by the Kabaka Foundation to donate monies and help change the lives of those battling Fistula in Uganda.’

Speaking on behalf of the Katikkiro of Buganda Dr. Charles Mayiga, Buganda’s Sports and Recreation Minister Mr. Henry Ssekabembe praised airtel’s initiative adding: “Our association in this campaign will go a long way in raising the awareness about the fistula affliction in Uganda.”

The media were encouraged to joine the cause and educate the nation about the fistula plight.

The function ended with the handing over of the 100,000,000/= donation from airtel Uganda to the Kabaka Foundation.
